Travel to me has always been exciting. Its all about the thrill of discovering something new and sharing it with those that we love. I have been to a few places stateside, I have ridden a private jet to Dubai, I have wondered the streets of London looking for the best Indian cuisine, and I people watched in Knightsbridge while sipping a frothy cappuccino. There are so many places that I have been and places I still want to go. Out of all of these places, the place I love the most is in the passenger seat next to my adventure buddy and husband, H.
Most of our time is consumed with chores, sports, or just plain chaos with this crew. Somehow we are supposed to raise these kids into adulthood without any major traumatic parenting style that will end them up in therapy for their entire adult life. Ope. I hope not. More about that later….
When we finally get to take time to ourselves, my hubby and I load up the car with a quick overnight bag and the air mattress and head on out. To the normal person, hours on the road may seem dreadful. Oh it was for me too until I started mentally making the travel to the destination part of the adventure too. No matter the length of time, it gives H and I the time to help build our bond together. We talk about everything that is on our minds. We share stories about how we grew up and people we once knew. We talk about deep feelings and demons we face daily. We talk about religion and movies and the random cow I just saw on the side of the road. We talk about how this damn sour dough isn’t working. We laugh and cry. There are no boundaries. It’s all about growing together and having that time together to show how important we are to one another.
Our most recent trip took us just a state away and there wasn’t much to it, but it was exactly what we needed. We had just sat down on Valentine’s afternoon. We were already in our comfy clothes and ready to relax after an event filled week. The phone call came. We had a sitter for the youngest! Time to hurry and pack and hit the road before the sitter changes her mind!!!! Rush.
With the hour we were driving up 65, without a clue of a plan. It didn’t matter. This is the freedom which we are are searching for. It is beyond wonderful to have an open block on the planner and to just go without some other worry to hold us down. It gives us the time to slow down and connect with each other and to find ourselves again so that we can come back that much better.
With our world in the shape that it is, we need more slowing down and just being. We have lost sight of that. Life isn’t meant to be rushed through. It is meant to be lived. This year and for many years to come, we are going to L.I.V.E. whenever possible. Life is short. Find your Saoirse on the road.
